Galaxy S II on Vodafone gets ICS to users delight

Vodafone has come to terms with the software update that will bring all users of the Samsung Galaxy S II up to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich this week. As all those using devices connected to mobile networks will tell you, it’s either a pain or a blessing when a software update comes through – especially when it’s Android. When it comes to Android ICS, the update is relatively simple, and as users of the Samsung line working with this update will tell you – it’s worth the less than 5 minutes it’ll take you to move on up.

We had a look at a very early version of the Galaxy S II’s version of Ice Cream Sandwich when it was in Alpha mode – this version being a nude Vanilla flavoring of the software more akin to the Galaxy Nexus than it was to what we’re seeing now. Now we’ve got the Galaxy S II on Samsung’s own TouchWiz, this allowing it to work extremely well with the other new devices from Samsung popping up this month including the Ice Cream Sandwich-laden Galaxy Tab 2.

Those of you looking to upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on the Galaxy S II running on Vodafone have only to head to settings, down to the bottom where it says Software Update – and make it happen. If you do not have an upgrade waiting for you there, you’ve more than likely got only days or hours to wait for the update to be pushed to you by your carrier. Twiddle your thumbs while you wait!

Huawei Ascend G300 Coming to the UK on April 13 via Vodafone

The Ascend G300 is one of the cheaper Huawei Android phones. The device was silently launched back in February at the Mobile World Congress, but the handset maker did not reveal any additional details on price or availability.

This why Vodafone UK’s recent announcement comes as a surprise, especially that Huawei usually launches its low-end handsets in North America with few exceptions.

Although the Chinese company announced plans to seriously enter the European smartphone market starting this year, there was no timeline for the move.

Well, it appears that the affordable Ascend G300 will be amongst the first Huawei smartphones that will try to conquer the European market.

Huawei Ascend G300 will be available in the UK beginning April 13. This is a Vodafone UK exclusive, so customers will be able to purchase it on PAYG (pay as you go) for only £100 (160 USD or 120 EUR) with a minimum £10 top-up.

Furthermore, those who don’t mind committing to a long-term contract can grab the Ascend G300 for free on £15.50, 24-month plans that offer subscribers 100 minutes, 500 texts, and 250MB of mobile data.

Although Ascend G300 is shipped with Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform out of the box, Huawei confirmed the smartphone would receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update by the end of the year.

The phone features a large 4.0-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports 480 x 800 pixels resolution and 16 million colors.

At its core, the device is equipped with a 1 GHz single-core processor, 2.5GB of internal memory, 512MB of RAM and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

There’s also a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, which features autofocus, LED flash and video recording, but Ascend G300 lacks a secondary camera for video calls. HSDPA and Wi-Fi support is included as well, along with Bluetooth and GPS with A-GPS support.
