MAP Leak Shows Verizon Getting Competitive On Galaxy Nexus Price

Earlier this week, Sprint formally announced the launch plans for its Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which so far has only been available to US smartphone users at a subsidized price from Verizon. Verizon’s been selling that model at a premium $300 on-contract, so the news that Sprint’s version of the phone, with the same 32GB of storage, would be available for a hundred dollars less seemed like a good way to steal a few sales from Verizon. Sprint may not end up getting that break after all, as a newly-leaked Verizon MAP list shows an upcoming price break for the Galaxy Nexus.

Sprint’s Galaxy Nexus goes up for sale this Sunday, April 22. According to this leak, one day later, on April 23, Verizon will reduce pricing on its GNex down to match Sprint’s $200 on-contract tag.

Considering that Sprint is launching the phone with its LTE network still not in operation, this sounds like bad news for the carrier. We could see customers rationalizing the delay in 4G service by thinking about what they were saving on the phone by going with Sprint, but without that incentive, the argument for Sprint’s version becomes harder to make. Sure, you get official Google Wallet support, and there’s Sprint unlimited data, but we have a feeling that many potential customers just aren’t going to be able to see past the 4G issue for now.
